Being bookish . . .

Princess M loves to read, and when she reads -- she is intent. Totally unaware of her surroundings, absorbed in the story. If it's an easy reader, she'll get through with it, close it, let out a contented sigh . . . and then pick up another one. Library trips are an adventure with this little girl. She'll pick out a stack of easy readers and sit at a table like a contented little lamb, quietly reading away - until she hits a funny part, then everyone knows where she is! Thankfully, the librarians all get a kick out of her. The funny part is the things she comes up with sometimes! For example --

We just bought a carton of Eggland's Best eggs, which we don't normally buy, but we needed a dozen and they were on sale. They are all stamped with EB on each egg. M didn't like that. At all. "But why do they have that?" So sorry to get different eggs, sweetie, but it's OK - it's the brand. Eggland's Best. Finally convinced they were OK to eat, she fixed her scrambled eggs (with a wee bit of help) and while she was eating them, made up a song about E.B. White! And a pig! I don't even remember how it went, I should have written it down at the time. Then she tells me that we need to go to the library and get some more books. Of course. We need Charlotte's Web for the 14th time. And a copy of Stuart Little wouldn't hurt, either. What kid looks at a stamped egg and thinks of E.B. White?!

The other day we were at the eye doctor's office and while in the waiting room - new books! - Princess M was reading a book about the Northern Lights. During her appointment, the doc shone the light in her eyes to see how the eyes were tracking, and afterwards, M says, "Wow! I see spots everywhere! All different colors! It's just like the Aurora Borealis!" The eye doctor about bit through her lip to keep from laughing while I explained about the book in the waiting room.

I can't even remember which book it is that has her calling me Mother, but it about drives T crazy. She even does it with a British accent. Now how do you get that from a book? Crazy kid. She's awesome.

I hope she grows up to be a writer. It is her plan. In fact, just yesterday she asked me to reserve the book about Beatrice Potter's life again. How perfect for her -- it's a book about books!
